This is Union Electric Steel

Union Electric Steel (UES) is a leading producer of forged and cast rolls for the worldwide steel and aluminum industries as well as a supplier of ingot and open die forged products for the oil and gas, aluminum, and plastic extrusion industries.

GrinderHeadquartered in Carnegie, PA, UES is recognized as one of the world’s largest, fully integrated producers of forged hardened steel, cast iron, and cast steel rolls for the ferrous and non-ferrous rolling industries. Total capacity exceeds 60,000 tons annually.

Union Electric Steel USA was founded in 1923. Specializing in forged roll production and technology since 1930 has made Union Electric Steel a recognized global leader in the roll industry. Our forged rolls and specialty forged products are manufactured in four facilities, located in Pennsylvania and Indiana.

The forged and cast roll businesses of Union Electric Steel and those acquired from Åkers AB officially began conducting business as Union Electric Åkers on February 12, 2016. As the world’s largest non-government-owned roll company, Union Electric Åkers is able to offer a complete product line to customers in every global region.

This acquisition brings together the world’s two roll technology leaders and complements our ability to provide the most reliable, high-performance products and unparalleled technical support and responsiveness. Union Electric Åkers has unmatched production capability, with a total capacity of 125,000 Metric Tons (MT) annually: 80,000 MT in cast products and 45,000 MT in forged products. Our product lines range from finished roll weights of 1 kg to a maximum of 71 MT, enabling Union Electric Åkers to provide rolls to the smallest strip mills, as well as to some of the largest plate mills in the world.  We are very pleased and excited to combine the best of forged and cast roll technology and manufacturing expertise through Union Electric Åkers.

In 2015, UES purchased Alloys Unlimited and Processing, LLC, a leader in the supply of specialty tool, alloy, and carbon steel round bar. Located in Austintown, Ohio, Alloys Unlimited also provides specialty services, including precision saw cutting, lathe capabilities, CNC machining, rough turning, boring, heat treating, trepanning, and production cutting to customers locally and nationwide.

UES cast rolls are manufactured in Gateshead, England. This facility was originally the Davy Roll Company, supplying cast rolls products for more than 150 years. In 1999, UES purchased the company and changed the name to Union Electric Steel UK Limited (UES UK). Today, UES UK continues the legacy of producing high-quality cast rolls for hot and cold strip mills, medium-to-heavy section mills, and plate mills.

Union Electric Steel’s dedication to excellence is supported by considerable investment in our people, research and development programs, state-of-the-art equipment, and in maintaining the best facilities in our industry.

Our strength is in our people; they are our most important asset. We have worked to recruit and retain highly trained, skilled and motivated employees and will continue to do so. It’s our number one priority.

Our research and development efforts have provided UES customers with quality products that meet or exceed expectations with superior performance in service. Development of exclusive chemistries and heat treatment combinations has provided new products with increased value for the ferrous and non-ferrous industries.

Our equipment and facilities are continually being developed and upgraded. Our equipment is the best the industry has to offer. Major plant expansions were completed in 2010 and 2011. The Harmon Creek plant added a 6,000-ton open-die hydraulic forge press, an 80 metric ton manipulator, and additional roughing lathes. The Carnegie plant installed a state-of-the-art 5-axis Multi-Task Finish Machining Center, Horizontal Universal Boring and Milling Machine, and a new Herkules roll grinder. Our UES UK facility recently commissioned a 75 metric ton Induction Melting System and an Advanced Roll Materials Heat Treatment Center.

Over the last decade our companies have truly become one—totally integrating roll technologies, specialty services, research and development, quality assurance, marketing, after-sales service and other disciplines. This integration, combined with a focused plan of continuous improvement to exceed customer satisfaction expectations, assures Union Electric Steel’s leadership position in the forged and cast engineered products industry. Customer Satisfaction is Our No. 1 Goal!
