The ESR process consists of first melting a standard EAF ingot electrode.  This ingot is then remelted by applying an electric charge through the electrode which causes arcing and melting.  Since the solidification is from the bottom up, the original ingot segregation patterns are eliminated and additional purification is obtained by flotation and retention of impurities into the molten flux as shown below.
