Melting & Forging

Melting and Forging

The fully integrated manufacturing operations of UES permit total control over all key process and product variables.  Melting and forging operations are conducted at the Harmon Creek plant in Burgettstown, Pennsylvania.  All heats are melted in a 75 ton electric arc furnace and are vacuum degassed.  Subsequent to an argon stir the metal is bottom poured into ingot molds designed for proper solidification and to satisfy the required forge reduction.  The ingots are soaked to ensure homogenization prior to forging.  Two forge presses are capable of 6000 tons and 3000 tons to attain consolidation of the forging.  The post-forge heat treatment is designed to achieve the proper microstructure, grain size and mechanical properties of the forged blank.
